How to Cook
Eggy Bread
Eggy Bread is a simple, much-loved classic, made by dipping slices of bread into a beaten egg mixture before frying until golden on the outside and soft in the middle. With just a few everyday ingredients, it’s quick to prepare and full of familiar comfort. Serve it warm for breakfast, brunch or a light lunch, either on its own or with your favourite toppings. A straightforward recipe that proves good food doesn’t need to be complicated.
Prep Time: 10 minutes
Cooking Time: 5 minutes
Serves: 4
Method
- 1 Whisk the egg and milk together.
- 2 Lay the bread in a shallow tray.
- 3 Pour over the egg mixture and turn the bread, making sure it’s coated all over.
- 4 Leave it for a couple of minutes to soak up all the eggy liquid.
- 5 Meanwhile, heat the butter and oil in a non-stick frying pan over a medium heat.
- 6 Place the eggy bread into the pan and fry for about 2 minutes, until the underside is golden brown.
- 7 Flip the bread over and cook for another minute or two until the other side is golden brown.
- 8 Cut the bread in half while it’s still in the pan to check that there is no uncooked egg left in the middle.
- 9 Serve with crisp home-smoked bacon and a generous drizzle of maple syrup, or with a mixed berry compôte and a spoonful of natural yogurt.
Ingredients
- 1x free-range hen’s egg
